Academic Appeals

If you are not happy with your assessment results, you may be asking yourself β€œwhat is an academic appeal?” and β€œhow can I appeal my university grades?”.

How to appeal

An academic appeal is a chance to:

  • challenge your results and/or
  • a decision made in relation to your progression

The appeal will usually need to be based on a permitted ground of appeal which may include:

  • Procedure: the university failing to follow their assessment procedures
  • Bias: bias or β€˜perception’ of bias
  • Mitigating/Extenuating Circumstances: circumstances that affected your performance that you were unable to report sooner a decision made following a request for consideration of personal circumstances (e.g. bereavement, illness)

However, each university will have their own permitted grounds of appeal, so it is important to make sure you have ticked all the right boxes to bring a successful case.

Universities will often set down very tight deadlines to submit an appeal, so make sure to check the exact deadline. If you submit your appeal out of time, you run the risk of your case being rejected.
